A modern menswear staple with a storied past, hoodies for men have well and truly shaken their rep. Shop our pick of the best, from Arket to Gucci

The mighty hoodie has an illustrious history. First produced by Champion in the 1930s, hoodies were originally marketed to labourers working in freezing warehouses in Upstate New York, and has since become an icon thanks to Rocky Balboa and Norma Kamali, who was among the first designers to embrace the new clothing.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that the term “hoodie” was first used and then picked up negative connotations, seen to be worn mainly by criminals. Then, in 2006, David Cameron said “for some, the hoodie represents all that’s wrong about youth culture in Britain today. For me, adult society’s response to the hoodie shows how far we are from finding the long-term answers to put things right.” Meanwhile, in fashion houses, hoodies found their way onto more and more catwalks (Vetements really did it first), making the hoodie into a wardrobe mainstay.

When it comes to hoodies, it’s difficult to get one wrong. As long as it is cosy, roomy and has long sleeves (even Ryan Gosling failed to make sleeveless hoodies a thing) you’re on to a winner. That said, there are some that trump all others and we felt it our duty to dig them out for you. From sporty, streetwear essentials to high-fashion takes, here’s our pick of the best hoodies for men.

Percival x Champion's third collaborative capsule, entitled ‘Bedfellows’, is among the latest of the brand's heralded collaborative works. Where the duo's first collections centred the duality of tradition and mysticism, Bedfellows is an ode to nature. Combining Champion's high-quality sweats with Percival's whimsical embroidery, this Dandelion hoodie is not your average piece of loungewear. £119. percivalclo.com

Recently donned by Harry Styles while on a hard-earned day off from the US leg of his show Love On Tour, this vibrant pink Pangaia hoodie is made from a breathable recycled cotton, which saves 20,000 litres of water per kilogram of regular cotton. So it seems that Mr Styles knows both what looks good, and what does good. £130. pangaia.com

An essential for your off-duty wardrobe, this Everlane pullover hoodie is constructed in an uber-comfortable waffle-knit that’s perfect for lounging around the house with the added bonus that it locks in heat when layered over T-shirts. In a goes-with-everything black, it’s sure to become a work-from-home essential. £55. everlane.com

Just another hoodie? Look again. Cos' take on the classically louche silhouette eschews the typical cotton fleece for a tactile bouclé knit to bring some texture and dimension to your seasonal looks. That, and it's pretty warm, too. £79. cos.com

Something of a hero piece for the fast-rising Mancunian streetwear brand, Represent's Owner's Club hoodie is an instant grail with its slouchy, oversized fit, tightly ribbed hem and cuffs and its unique Cobrax popper hood. As many of us have re-familiarised ourselves with over the last year (thanks in part to Adam Driver and Lady Gaga), Gucci is a fashion house with a storied history. In celebration of Gucci's first centennial, the 'Gucci 1921 Firenze' print of this hoodie speaks to the rich foundation of not just the brand, but its signature Web and Horsebit motifs, which both sit centre stage on the piece's chest. Say it with us now: the father, the son, and the House of Gucci. £850. gucci.com
